About ‘Path to the Gaisberg Glacier’ by Marcel Hechler

I took this photo during my summer holiday in the Ötztal, on the way up to the Gaisbergferner. I was actually on my way to the Granatenkogel, where, with a bit of luck, you can find garnets in the rock — but at this spot, I simply stopped. The narrow path wound its way up the slope ahead of me, and at the end, the view opened out onto the glacier, which pushes its way down into the valley between the dark rocky ridges.

The sun was high in the sky, shining like a bright star over the ice. I liked how the backlighting outlined the little things by the side of the path: the rough grass, the hardy cushion plants that survive up here at over two thousand metres. If you look closely, you’ll spot them on the right-hand side of the picture.

For me, the photo captures that feeling of climbing higher — the mixture of exertion and the quiet reward when the whole expanse suddenly opens up. Powerful and serene at the same time.

Hanging on the wall, the portrait format really comes into its own in a bright living room, in a hallway or on a staircase – anywhere where a picture is meant to bring a sense of space and fresh mountain air into the room. It suits a natural, earthy interior just as well as clean, modern spaces.
