I think this is a beech rooter. It normally grows on the trunk of beeches, but this one was in the carcass of a dead tree that was so far gone that I couldn't even recognise it. This mushroom stood in a crevice, a cavern of that carcass. The sun fell on it, so that the dark background remained dark and the mushroom glowed brightly, as if it were an apparition in Lourdes. I have that from hear-say, because I have no urge to go there . But that's what this reminded me of.
The beech root fungus is agaric, with the lamellae under the cap, radially oozing from the stem and common. It is a saprotroph; it clears away dead material and returns those elements to circulation.
