About ‘Between heaven and reflection’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

A black-and-white lighthouse stands on a barren rocky coast beneath an impressive, heavily overcast sky. At its base lies a still pool of water in which the tower is almost entirely reflected. This creates a second lighthouse, upside down in the landscape, with the horizon serving as the dividing line between reality and reflection.

For me, that reflection is the heart of this photograph. The real lighthouse stands firm and upright amongst the rocks, whilst its reflection in the dark water forms an almost mysterious counterpart. Even the clouds are captured in the reflection, connecting the top and bottom of the image. The light behind the lighthouse lends the threatening sky a sense of hope. Dark clouds are gathering, but the light breaks through precisely around the beacon. To me, that contrast captures what a lighthouse symbolises: direction and a sense of stability, precisely when conditions are unpredictable.

The understated treatment emphasises light, form and contrast. The rough textures of the rock contrast with the mirror-smooth water, whilst the simple black-and-white form of the lighthouse acts as a focal point in the landscape.

Hanging on the wall, this image has a powerful yet serene presence. The vertical composition and almost symmetrical reflection create a great sense of depth, whilst the dark tones lend an understated atmosphere. A piece for lovers of rugged coastal landscapes, lighthouses and that special moment when light, water and landscape come together perfectly.
