Bowmore is a Scottish Islay single malt whisky. The distillery was built in 1779 and can be found in the town of the same name. Bowmore is the oldest legal whisky distillery on the island of Islay. It is owned by Morrison Bowmore, which is owned by Japan's Suntory.
Bowmore has an unusually long list of whiskies, of various ages. Some of the varieties are:
-Bowmore Legend: the cheapest bottling. No age is stated on the label; it is a malt aged between 8 and 10 years.
-Bowmore Surf: same as Legend, for the European market.
-Bowmore 12 Year Old
-Bowmore Enigma 12 Year Old: this special bottling has had most of its maturation in sherry casks, which is very special and unusual for Bowmore
-Bowmore Cask Strength: is bottled straight from the cask. 56% alcohol.
The distillery's water comes from the River Laggan. Bowmore has an eight-tonne mash tun and six washbacks. Distilling is done with two wash stills with a capacity of 30,940 litres and two spirit stills with a capacity of 14,750 and 14,637 litres respectively, which are heated by steam. About 1.7 million litres of alcohol are produced per year. All whisky traded under its own brand is matured on the Isle of Islay. Bowmore whisky is also used in blended whiskies such as "Black Bottle", "Rob Roy" and "Islay Hallmark".
