In the beautiful temple city of Ayutthaya, I biked to Wat Phra Mahathat, one of Thailand's oldest temples from the 14th century. The temple was the centre of religious ceremonies and a tribute to the then king. Here I stumbled upon a very special sculpture, literally and figuratively. Over the centuries, several Buddha statues here have been totally overgrown by the Banyan tree, also known as strangler fig. Only the Buddha head is still visible. The Thai revere this place, which they consider sacred.
