In 2013, I travelled through Sri Lanka for a photo report for Max Havelaar on Fairtrade tea, spices and coconuts. We travelled with a group of journalists past beautiful tea fields and Fairtrade plantations.
For me, the fresh green tea leaves and the weathered hands of this beautiful Sri Lankan tea picker show the contrast between rich and poor. Using a telephoto lens allowed me to focus on that and blurs the background. It is hard work for the tea pickers who get paid by the kilo.
Fairtrade stands for fair trade, striking the right balance for people, animals and the environment and giving farmers a fair price for their produce. From a communal greenhouse, they also take care of their families with housing, education and health care.
