Located in both Montenegro and Albania, Lake Shkodër (Lake Skhodra) is one of the largest bird sanctuaries in Europe and therefore popular with birdwatchers. The lake is on one of the most important migration routes in Europe and is a very important site for migratory birds, some of which are threatened worldwide. In summer, Lake Shkodër is an oasis for as many as 1.5-2.5 million birds (and birdwatchers). The rare and endangered Dalmatian pelican (crucian pelican) has nests on floating peat islands at the northern end of the lake.
