Edam is a small town in the province of North Holland and together with Volendam forms the municipality of Edam-Volendam. It is a picturesque and modern water town where, certainly in the city centre, the old Dutch ancestor scent still lies like a blanket over the town. Lots of water, ships and wooden bridges, many narrow alleys and lots of silence. Edam is situated on the river IJe or E, from which the city's name is derived. Edam received city rights in 1357.
