About ‘Eye contact’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

A chimpanzee looks directly into the camera, surrounded by almost complete darkness. The soft light falls precisely on the face, the eyes and the raised hand. This creates a portrait that feels almost human, and in which the gaze in particular captures the viewer’s attention.

What makes this photograph so powerful for me is the stillness. On the surface, little seems to be happening, but it is precisely this that gives every subtle expression its meaning. The eyes are sharp and attentive, whilst the posture appears relaxed. Moreover, the bent arm and hand lend the image a thoughtful quality, as if the subject has paused briefly in the midst of a movement.

The dark editing enhances that sense of intimacy. Large parts of the body are lost in the shadows, leaving only the essential forms. The face emerges gently from the darkness, and the warm background provides just enough contrast without demanding attention.

For me, this photograph is primarily about recognition. Not because we need to attribute human emotions to the animal, but because such a direct gaze almost automatically evokes a reaction. For a brief moment, the distance between the viewer and the subject seems surprisingly small.

On the wall, this is a restrained yet compelling image. From a distance, it is the dark tones and the face that stand out most; up close, the skin, fur, eyes and subtle highlights become increasingly significant. A portrait that does not cry out for attention, but which does manage to hold it for a long time.
