About ‘Golden bow’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

The wooden bow of a traditional boat cuts through an almost entirely light-coloured setting like a powerful form. The warm, golden-brown wood contrasts beautifully with the soft white of the water. Beneath the boat, a distorted reflection appears, in which the same golden hues come to life once more.

What draws me to this image are the lines and materials. The gracefully rising bow, the visible rivets and the varying shades of wood showcase the boat’s craftsmanship. Sunlight reflected off the water onto the wood also casts a playful pattern of light across the hull.

By deliberately keeping the surroundings very light, virtually everything that might be distracting disappears. As a result, the boat becomes less of a documentary photograph of a vessel and more of a study of form, wood, light and water. The expansive white areas give the image a calm, minimalist feel.

For me, this photograph also speaks to traditional craftsmanship and a connection to the water. The weathered wood bears traces of use, yet the elegant shape of the bow has remained timeless.

On the wall, this piece brings warmth without feeling heavy. The combination of plenty of light space with honey-coloured wood fits beautifully into a calm, Scandinavian or minimalist interior. Up close, the wood grain and light reflections stand out; from a distance, it is the elegant simplicity of the form that dominates.
