About the artwork

A beautiful corner in the Teylers museum with several objects together. The building is more than two hundred years old, which gives a wonderful atmosphere to the collection and to the photo. The light fell beautifully on the fossil skull, which made me feel like I was in a museum.

Fayoum's Two-horned Monster at Teylers Museum in Haarlem refers to a replica of the skull of Arsinoitherium, an extinct mammal that lived about 36 to 30 million years ago. Discovered in the Fayoum region of Egypt, Arsinoitherium resembled a rhinoceros and had two large, conical horns on its nose. This herbivorous animal lived in tropical forests and swamps and was more closely related to elephants than rhinos. The replica in Teylers Museum has been meticulously crafted to give visitors an impression of the impressive animal. It offers insight into the evolutionary history of mammals and the biodiversity of the Eocene and Oligocene. Teylers Museum, founded in 1784 and the oldest museum in the Netherlands, is known for its rich collection in natural sciences, art and history. The museum's fossil room houses not only the Arsinoitherium skull, but also numerous other fossils, minerals and scientific instruments, which together give a deep insight into the world of science and palaeontology.
