These are not roots, nor is it an archaeological soil sample, nor is it part of the Bayeux Carpet. This is very simply the gutter on the balcony where some water is frozen. The ridges above and below are concrete edges, between which rainwater normally flows to the drain. Now the little water is frozen into crystals which gives a special drawing. The underlying colour of the concrete is reminiscent of soil.
