These are four common deer mushrooms. They are in the cavity of a large log. You could compare that stump to a tube that had been sawn lengthways. So they were sheltered in there, with dead wood on three sides and an opening to the path. There are four of them and I photographed from below, so that both at least a hat and the slats were visible. I set the photo in black and white for artistic effect.
The common deer mushroom is a agaric, recognisable by the lamellae under the cap. It is more often found in deciduous trees, stumps, and rotting dead stumps. It is very common in the Netherlands.
