During our holiday through northern Spain, we stayed in a flat in Brez, high atop the mountain, overlooking the Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa.
Even before sunrise, I stood on our sun terrace, camera and tripod at the ready, while the world below was still shrouded in silence.
The sky was clear, and between the mountain ridges hung a veil of mist, exactly that mysterious layer I was hoping for. As the sun slowly rose, the sky coloured in soft hues of purple and gold. The layered mountain peaks unfolded like a graphic pattern, each with its own texture and tone.
For this shot, I used a zoom lens, pulling the landscape together as it were, the different layers visually shifting closer together, enhancing the rhythm and depth of the image. From this high position, I was able to capture the landscape in full depth, with a composition that exudes tranquillity and layering.
Once back in the Netherlands, I edit my images with an eye for nuance. I carefully tune contrast, colour and sharpness to preserve the atmosphere of that early moment. For me, this work captures the essence of the Picos de Europa: hushed, layered and timeless, seen from our refuge above the clouds.
