About "North American P-51D nicknamed "The Shark"."

About the artwork

North American P-51D nicknamed "The Shark" Registration: KH774 (G-SHWN / 44-73877).This Mustang served in the Royal Air Force. The P-51 Mustang was designed and built by North American Aviation at the request of the British.

The Mustang was originally designed with an Allison V-1710 engine, which unfortunately provided limited high-altitude performance. After the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was used, the aircraft performed much better at higher altitudes, making the Mustang match or even surpass Luftwaffe fighters.
The Mustang P-51D received the Packard V-1650-7, a licence-built version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin. The aircraft consumed relatively little fuel compared to other aircraft and had a large fuel capacity. This made it the ideal aircraft to protect Allied bombers over enemy territory. This picture was taken on 9 July 2016 during the Flying Legends Airshow at Duxford Airfield.
