In the heart of Alkmaar, you just happen to stumble across this beautiful sign above the shop Sweets & Antiques. The wrought-iron sign, a kind of 'gaper', exudes nostalgia. You imagine yourself back in time, when craft shops still had ornate, handmade signs instead of light boxes or digital displays.
This particular one evokes memories of a time when shopping was an artisanal experience. The combination of candy and antiques is unique in itself and enhances the feeling of "preserving the old". The red-green window frames, the scrolled ironwork and the small street the shop is on all contribute to that almost cinematic street scene that you don't often come across anymore.
At a time when the pace is fast and shopping streets are starting to look more and more alike, a place like this is especially striking.
This is exactly why heritage and nostalgia are making a comeback. In Alkmaar - and especially in the old town centre - you can see how the old and new coexist. Between hip coffee bars and modern concept stores, these characterful details remain preserved and visible.
