Yggdrasil is the world tree in Nordic cosmogony. The name literally translates as 'horse of Yggr', or 'horse of Odin', and refers to the fierce life force that carries it and carries it everywhere.
Yggdrasil is the tree of life and knowledge, the symbol of the endlessly branched form of that which is. At the same time, it carries and connects the worlds as the world axis (axis mundi). It simultaneously shows the way to the higher, the path the shaman follows to enter the realm of gods and spirits. He reaches from the underworld straight through the human world to the world of gods and heroes.
Yggdrasil is also central to the myth of the Ragnarök. When the tree of life begins to tremble, it nears the end of the world. The only two human survivors (there are some among the gods too), Lif (life) and Lifthrasir (lust for life), can escape by hiding in the branches of Yggdrasil, where they feed on morning dew and enjoy the protection of the tree
