The Hat by Bianca ter Riet

This painting is dominated by a powerful, mysterious atmosphere in which colour and emptiness reinforce one another. At the centre of the composition is a figure whose face is completely concealed beneath a striking hat. The hat is ochre-yellow in colour, warm and earthy, and is crossed by a wide black band that defines its shape in a clean, graphic manner. It is pulled down low over the face, concealing all facial features. This creates a sense of anonymity, as if the person were both present and absent.

The background is an intense black, functioning as a deep, silent space in which the other elements stand out sharply. From this darkness emerges a botanical, abstract pattern that unfolds across the figure’s upper body. The motif consists of dusky pink accents and shades of orange which together form an organic, almost dreamlike pattern. The shapes are reminiscent of leaves and natural structures, but are deliberately not literal, making the painting an abstract interpretation of nature and growth. At shoulder level and above, palm leaves are visible, standing out against the black background. They appear to float lightly or open slowly in the space, creating a subtle tension between stillness and movement. The leaves enhance the tropical, almost exotic character of the work, yet remain understated due to the contrast with the deep black.

The figure’s upper body is only partially visible. Anything not covered by the hat or the botanical pattern is absorbed into the black. As a result, the body does not appear to be fully present in a physical sense, but rather seems to be composed of areas of colour and textures emerging from the background.
