About the artwork

The town of Aschersleben is the oldest documented town in Saxony-Anhalt. Aschersleben was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 753.

The Johannistorturm is the most stately of the surviving towers and the only surviving inner town gate. It was a fortress and gate tower at the same time. It was built in 1350 and reinforced in 1571 to form a gate castle. With a total height of 42 m and a base area of 8.2 x 8.2 m, it looks imposing. There are 4 buttresses in front of the corners. The pointed-arched passage used to be protected by a mighty portcullis, which could be lowered on chains in the still existing grooves on the field side. A cornice surrounds the tower. The storeys, separated by beamed ceilings, are lit by two richly structured windows, apart from small light openings. The sculpture "Adam Olearius misses the world" can also be found on the tower. The bronze sculpture honours and commemorates the polymath Adam Olearius, who was born in Aschersleben in 1599. Olearius went to school here, then studied in Leipzig and shortly afterwards put his knowledge to work for Frederick III (1587-1659), Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. Olearius created the Gottorf Globe, a forerunner of the planetarium, and is considered the founder of scientific travel description.
