About ‘The Midpoint sign on Route 66’ by Marald Bes

The sign of the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, Texas, exactly halfway along Route 66 between Chicago and Santa Monica.

Taken from below against a clean pale blue sky, so the sign carries the whole picture and nothing else is in it. The shape is an arrow pointing right, with a dark red panel holding the lettering and a narrow metal rim around it.

The sun sits directly behind it and breaks through the tip as a star, with a streak of light running across the metal.

Look at that tip and you see the paint has gone completely. Bare weathered metal comes through, with rust along the edge. That worn patch is the best detail in the frame, because it tells you how long the sign has been pointing.

The pole underneath is white and plain and drops out of the bottom of the picture.

No road, no car, no building.

This one is for the road tripper with Route 66 still to drive.
