About ‘The baths beneath the Alcázar’ by Marald Bes

Beneath the Alcázar of Seville lie the baths of María de Padilla, a long vaulted space with a pool of water across the whole floor.

The vault is built from gothic ribs meeting in a point. Up there the stone has a warm ochre colour from the sparse light.

Lower down, where the water starts, that colour turns green and almost black.

The water is completely still, so the reflection is nearly perfect. Every arch comes back whole, and at the far end a round window doubles itself into a figure of eight on its side.

Look longer and you see the bottom is not empty. Under the surface, stones and deposits show through, even coins thrown in there for wishes and good luck, some greenish and mottled, a completely different texture from the smooth vault above.

Cool, underground and quiet. The kind of space where sound behaves differently.

On a wall this suits somewhere with depth of its own: a stairwell, a long corridor, or a wall you walk towards from a distance. For anyone who loves buildings that stop you for a moment.
