About ‘The gaze’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

This portrait is all about one thing: connection. By getting so close to the chimpanzee’s face, virtually every distraction disappears. No surroundings, no context, just a face looking back from the darkness.

The eyes naturally form the focal point. They lie deep in the shadows, yet catch just enough light to bring the gaze to life. Around them, the details become almost tangible: the texture of the skin, fine hairs, wrinkles and subtle variations in colour. The soft, dark light lends the portrait a subdued and almost painterly quality.

The central, almost symmetrical composition works particularly well here. Normally, such a placement can feel static, but with this subject it actually heightens the sense of confrontation. You really cannot look away. The dark areas surrounding the face frame the image and constantly draw the viewer back to those eyes.

What I like is that the photograph leaves room for your own interpretation. The expression can come across as calm, curious, serious or pensive, without any single meaning being imposed. It is precisely this ambiguity that gives the image its power.

As a wall hanging, this photograph has a certain monumental quality. Particularly when printed in large format, the small details become visible, whilst from a distance it is the gaze that strikes you most. As a result, the gaze feels less like a record of an animal and more like a classical portrait in which the subject in front of the camera is ultimately observed just as closely.
