This picture was taken on the banks of the river Maas near Cuijk, Noord-Brabant. this area is also known as the Maasheggen. Characteristic for the Maasheggen is that the landscape is divided into a large number of small plots separated by hawthorn and blackthorn hedges. The Meuse hedges are located in Brabant in the floodplains of the Meuse in the area near the villages Vierlingsbeek, Boxmeer and Oeffelt. The centuries-old landscape is unique in Western Europe, and the Meuse hedges form a special ecosystem where a number of rare plant and animal species occur.
