About ‘Wildspitze in black and white’ by Marcel Hechler

Before me lies the Wildspitze, at 3,768 metres the second-highest mountain in Austria. From the Tiefenbachkogel, I have an unobstructed view of its entire majesty: the sharply defined summit structure, the dark ridges to the left and right, and in between the vast, pale glacier of the Mittelbergferner, which stretches down from the firn field into the valley.

I was up there on that summer’s day because it was precisely this view that drew me in — that mixture of bare rock and ancient ice that one finds only in the high mountains. If you look closely, you can make out the fine crevasse patterns and the sweeping lines in the lower part of the glacier, etched into the slope by the flowing ice over the years. It is only at second glance that you realise just how much movement lies within this seemingly motionless landscape.

I deliberately chose to render the image in black and white. Without colour, the form comes to the fore: the interplay of light and shadow, the texture of the rock faces, the glistening white of the ice against the dark stone. This strips the scene of its postcard-like quality and lends it a sense of calm, almost sublime.

This panorama is best displayed on a wall where it has space and depth — above a sofa, in a hallway or in a clean, modern room, to which it lends depth and a sense of calm strength.
