The Andromeda galaxy or the Andromeda Nebula (M31) is a spiral galaxy, in the constellation of Andromeda. The galaxy has the same shape as the Milky Way, but is a lot larger. The distance is estimated at about 2.54 million light years, the diameter about 250,000 light years. The mass is estimated at 300 to 400 billion solar masses, the total mass including the halo at 1.2 trillion solar masses. Compared to the latest estimates of the total mass of our own galaxy, which amounts to 1.9 trillion solar masses, M31 would therefore be somewhat lighter, and much less dense. Together with the Milky Way and a number of smaller galaxies, the Andromeda Nebula forms the Local Group.
