Altamura is a town in the southern Italian region of Apulia and is located just 50 kilometres southwest of the capital of the Apulia region, Bari. Gravina in Puglia is less than 12 kilometres away and the famous cave city of Matera (in the Basilicata region) is also just under 20 kilometres away. Altamura has a very beautiful historic centre, in the middle of which is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta In Cielo, the cathedral of Altamura. The origins of Altamura Cathedral date back to the early 13th century. The town is known throughout Italy for its famous Pane di Altamura, a delicious bread made from durum wheat with a thick crust.
Puglia is a southern Italian region that forms the heel of the Italian boot and is known for its hill towns with whitewashed houses, centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometres of Mediterranean coastline. The capital Bari is a lively harbour and university city. Lecce is known as the "Florence of the South" due to its baroque architecture. Alberobello and the Valle d'Itria are characterised by their trulli stone huts with striking conical roofs.
