In Zwolle there is a statue of Archangel Michael on the big market. In the Middle Ages it was customary for cities to choose their own saint. Zwolle (then still Suolle) was one of the most important Hanseatic cities and chose Michael as its patron saint to protect the prosperity and wealth of the people of Zwolle.
The sculpture consists of approximately 350 layers of glass, each 1 cm thick. Artist Herman Lamers.
