Berchtesgaden belongs to the administrative district of Upper Bavaria in the Free State of Bavaria. The municipality is part of the high alpine region in the southern district of Berchtesgadener Land, which is almost completely surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps and to the east, south and southwest by the Austrian province of Salzburg.
The Royal Berchtesgaden Castle is a listed and ensemble-protected former Augustinian canons' monastery whose beginnings date back to around 1102 and which, after several alterations, also served as the residence of the prince provostry of Berchtesgaden.
The collegiate church of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist is part of the building ensemble of the Royal Palace.
Built from the beginning of the 12th century, it was used until secularisation as the "collegiate church" of the Augustinian canons within the monastery of Berchtesgaden (from 1559 prince-provostry), which had been founded shortly before. Since 1803 it has functioned as the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Andrew in Berchtesgaden.
