I took this photo in the evening with a long shutter speed from the Hartel Bridge.
The Botlek is a port and industrial area in Rotterdam, located west of the Oude Maas between the Scheur and the A15. The Botlek area is mainly characterized by petrochemical industry and tank storage companies, and the storage of dry bulk goods. The first company to settle there was Dow Chemical in 1956, followed by Cornelis Verolme's shipyard in 1957. By 1960 all available land had been issued. The Dow site was taken over by LBC a few years ago, and the former Verolme shipyard is nowadays mostly used as a repair yard, especially for the offshore industry.
The area around the Brittanniëhaven and the Seinehaven on the island of Rozenburg, on the other side of the A15, is considered by some to belong to the Botlek area. There are chemical companies there too, but also transhipment companies for cars. However, this area, where the village of Blankenburg used to be located, was at the time constructed as Europoort Oost. It is therefore of a slightly later date than the Botlek area. The first companies to come there in 1961 were Wescon and a branch of ICI, which was taken over by Huntsman at the end of the 20th century.
