If spring is somewhat on its way, you can see the pink flowers of the Day Cuckoo Flower, Silene dioica, in the edges of thickets, in wet meadows, at ditch edges and in deciduous forests from mid-April onwards. The leaves sit opposite each other on the stems and are hairy just like those stems. Most noticeable are the regular, five-petaled pink to red flowers at the top of the plant in the epidermis, the inflorescence that is so characteristic of the Carnation family. It is also striking that you have plants with flowers with narrow slender calyxes and plants with swollen, thick calyxes. If you take a closer look at those two types of flowers you will find only stamens in the slender one and the ovary and stigmas in the thick one. It is a dioecious (= dioica) species.
