Catalonia is one of the 17 autonomous regions of Spain with Barcelona as its capital. It has a population of over 7.5 million inhabitants, these inhabitants are called Catalans. The Catalan national day is celebrated on september 11.
Catalonia is located in the northeast of Spain on the Mediterranean coast and has a coastline of 580 kilometers which consists of the Costa Brava, Costa del Maresme, Costa del Garraf and Costa Daurada. The region is bordered to the South to the Comunidad Valenciana, in the West to Aragon and France and Andorra to the North.
It has three official languages: Catalan, Spanish and Aranees spoken in the Aran Valley, a region in the Catalan Pyrenees. It is one of the three wealthiest regions of Spain. Catalonia has a highly developed their own identity and the use of the Catalan language is strongly promoted by the State Government.
Catalonia on 23 april celebrates the feast of the Patron Saint, Sant Jordi. According to tradition, get on that day men women a rose and a book. Flower stands everywhere on this day In Barcelona and book stalls.
The Parliament of Catalonia decided on 28 July 2010 with 68 votes for, 55 against and 9 abstentions to ban bullfights. The law entered into force on 1 January 2012. This makes it the first autonomous region on the Spanish mainland where prohibited, after it was already banned in the Canary Islands in 1991.
