Erfurt has been the capital of the Free State of Thuringia since 1991. Erfurt has about 215,000 inhabitants.
Erfurt Cathedral is the most important and oldest church building in Erfurt. It is 81.26 metres high and has the world's largest free-swinging bell from the Middle Ages, the Gloriosa. Erfurt Cathedral, which dates back to the 8th century, is where the theological originator of the Reformation, Martin Luther, was ordained as a priest.
The Severi Church is a church building of the Roman Catholic Church in Erfurt. It stands on the Domberg, right next to Erfurt Cathedral. As a unique architectural ensemble, the two churches together form the city's landmark.
Another well-known sight is the Krämerbrücke bridge over the River Gera. It is lined with medieval houses and shops.
Erfurt has numerous other cultural and architectural sights. The Petersberg Citadel, the fish market with the town hall, the Wenigemarkt and the entire medieval old town are also well-known and well worth a visit.
