Essaouira is a port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast. The medina (old town) is surrounded by 18th century fortification walls that run along the coast. They are called the Skala de la Kasbah and were once designed by European engineers. The walls are lined with old brass cannons and offer sea views. Strong trade winds provide ideal conditions for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing on the town's crescent-shaped beach.
The Essaouira Citadel is a historic fortress and popular photo spot with an active fishing port and fish market.
