Wallgau is located in the Upper Isar Valley about 14 kilometres east of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and belongs to the Werdenfelser Land in the Oberland region. Along with Mittenwald and Krün, Wallgau is the most northerly of the three communities in the Upper Isar Valley that have joined together to form Alpenwelt Karwendel for tourism. Together with Krün, the community is located on the border of the mountain groups Bavarian Pre-Alps in the north and Karwendel in the south. The village is overlooked in the southeast by the Schöttelkarspitze, 2050 m above sea level, of the Soierngruppe, which belongs to Mittenwald, while in the northwest the Estergebirge, a mountain range averaging about 2000 m above sea level, with the Schafkopf (1310 m above sea level) and the local mountain Krepelschrofen (1160 m above sea level, sometimes also called Krepelschroffen) run as foothills directly above the village. The Wetterstein Mountains, whose crest together with the Karwendel Mountains forms the border to Austria, visually dominate in a south-westerly direction. Wallgau is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Together with Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the district capital and cultural centre, and other municipalities, it is part of Werdenfelser Land. The German-Austrian border runs a few kilometres to the south. Together with Krün and Mittenwald, Wallgau forms the Alpenwelt Karwendel tourism association, which markets the region all year round as a starting point for sports and leisure activities such as hiking and cross-country skiing.
