The Grey Heron is the second largest native bird after the stork and the most common heron species in Central Europe. It is at home in various habitats, most often seen in shallow water zones of lakes.
Its typical flight silhouette can be distinguished from the crane and the stork mainly by the retracted head.
Grey herons grow up to 90 centimetres tall and have a wingspan of up to 170 centimetres. Nevertheless, they are quite light: an adult grey heron weighs only about one and a half to two kilograms.
