Former working island Neeltje Jans seen from the air.
The Oosterscheldekering is a flood barrier in the Eastern Scheldt and is part of the Delta Works.
A construction pit in the artificial island of Neeltje Jans was used to build this dam-with-slides. Here the huge concrete pillars were built, which were then sailed to the right place with a specially built lifting vessel.
Mats were placed under these piers to prevent the sand in the seabed from being washed away.
