Jökulsárlón is the most famous and largest glacial lake in Iceland. It is located south of the Vatnajökull glacier between the national park Skaftafell and the town of Höfn. The glacial lake is fairly new as it was only created in the years 1934-1935, however, the lake grew rapidly from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 23 km² today due to glacier melting. With a depth of about 250 metres, Jökulsárlón is currently the deepest lake in the country. The lake is popular with tourists due to the ever-floating icebergs with beautiful ice formations. There is an information centre and boat trips including an amphibious vehicle are possible on the lake.
