The Binnenalster is one of two artificial lakes within the city limits of Hamburg. Today's Binnenalster was created around 1250 by building a dam to dam up the Alster for mill purposes.
The Binnenalster is the smaller, southern part of the Alster lake and is characteristically recognisable by the Alster fountain, which can reach a height of up to 60 metres.
