Gulls are seabirds of the family Laridae and the order waders (Charadriiformes). 102 species have been named.[1] They are generally medium-sized to fairly large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head and beak. They have a typical shrill, shrieking call, which is called "kliauwen". The beak is firm and quite long, the legs have flippers. The " real " gulls vary in size from the Pygmy Gull (120 g and 29 cm) to the Great Black-backed Gull (1.75 kg and 76 cm).
According to the IOC World Bird List, terns also belong to this family and form a subfamily or gender group. Very often the terns are presented as a family of their own (the Sternidae). On average terns are slimmer and smaller, with a slender, pointed beak. However, the giant tern is larger than many small species " real " gulls. The dwarf tern is smaller than the smallest gull.
