Wonderful winter weather: blue sky, fresh snow - ideal for a trip to the Harz Mountains!
Schierke is a district of the town of Wernigerode in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt and the last village below the Brocken summit. The village is nestled deep in the valley of the cold Bode at an altitude of between 580 and 640 metres above sea level. Schierke railway station is located slightly above the village. The town centre can be reached on foot in approx. 20 minutes.
From Schierke you can hike to the Brocken via various paths. In this photo you can see the Brocken ascent "Alte Bobbahn", which crosses the Bahnparallelweg - directly on the tracks of the Brocken railway - at this point.
At 1142 metres above sea level, the Brocken is the highest mountain in the Harz low mountain range, in Saxony-Anhalt and in the whole of northern Germany. It is located in the Schierke district of the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.
The Harz is a low mountain range in Germany and the highest mountain range in northern Germany. It lies at the intersection of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The largest part of the Harz lies in Saxony-Anhalt, the western part of the Harz belongs to Lower Saxony and a small part of the Harz lies in Thuringia, in the district of Nordhausen.
