For this shot, I travelled from my home town Haarlem to The Hague, a city that always exudes something stately. My goal: to capture the Hofvijver in the right light, with the Binnenhof and the reflections in the water as protagonists.
It was a calm afternoon, the light was already starting to soften a little. The wind was minimal, making the water surface almost mirror-smooth. Ideal conditions to capture the historic facades and towers of the Binnenhof in a symmetrical image. I chose a viewpoint where the lines of the quay and the water reinforced the composition, and the reflection completed the image.
With my camera on a tripod and the settings carefully tuned, low ISO, small aperture and slower shutter speed, I was able to capture the serenity of the moment. No rush, no crowds. Just the soft light, the water and the architecture.
At home behind my screen, I work the image further. I fine-tune contrast, colour and sharpness to preserve the atmosphere of that moment. I want the viewer to stop for a moment, just like I did there.
A work that for me shows the balance between history and tranquillity in The Hague. Classic, hushed and full of character.
