This photograph shows a typical example of spa architecture on the island of Usedom on the Baltic Sea.
The lavishly restored Wilhelminian-style villa, the "Seeschloß Heringsdorf", is located in the centre of the seaside resort of Heringsdorf, just a few steps from the promenade and the pier. The promenade connects Heringsdorf with 2 other seaside resorts, which are collectively known as the "Kaiserbäder". These are the seaside resorts of Ahlbeck and Bansin. The neighbouring seaside resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin grew together over the course of time to such an extent that in the 20th century they were also referred to as "the three sisters". They are connected to Swinemünde on the Polish side by a twelve-kilometre-long beach promenade.
Bathing tourism on Usedom began in the Baltic seaside resort of Heringsdorf. The first hotel was opened in 1825 and by the end of the century the former fishing colony had developed into the "Nice of the Baltic". Heringsdorf is still one of the most popular holiday resorts on the Baltic Sea today.
Until recently, the Heringsdorf pier on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom was the longest pier in Germany at 508 metres in length.
