The Lukasklause with the medieval fortress building of the Welsche Turm is located on the edge of the best-preserved section of Magdeburg's city wall. It has housed the Otto von Guericke Centre since 1995. The first documentary mention of the Welsche Turm, part of today's Lukasklause, was in 1279 in the Schöppenchronik. The tower was part of the medieval city fortifications. In 1900, the St. Lukas e.V. artists' association in Magdeburg acquired the tower, extended it and added an annex. The building was named after the patron saint of artists, St. Lukas, and has been called Lukasklause since 1904.
