This picture was taken shortly after sunset during the so-called blue hour in a long exposure. It shows the view over the Elbe to Magdeburg city centre with the cathedral and the monastery of Our Lady.
Magdeburg Cathedral is the city's landmark. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil. It is the burial place of the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, Otto the Great, and his first wife, Queen Editha, and the most important sacred building in the eastern federal states.
The Monastery of Our Lady is a monastery complex in Magdeburg's historic city centre. The ensemble of buildings is one of the most important Romanesque complexes in Germany. Today, the buildings are used as the municipal art museum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen and a concert hall.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history.
