The Lukasklause with the medieval fortress of the Welschen Turm lies on the edge of the best-preserved section of Magdeburg's city wall. It was first mentioned in a document in 1279.
The tower was part of the medieval city fortifications. In 1631, the imperial troops under Tilly invaded the city near the tower and completely devastated it. As an engineer in Swedish service, Otto von Guericke oversaw the reconstruction of the fortifications, the Elbe bridges and the tower from 1632.
Today, the Lukasklause houses a museum.
