This picture was taken shortly after sunset in a long exposure. It shows the view across the Elbe to the famous Magdeburg Cathedral. In the background you can also see the watchtower "Kiek in de Köken", the towers of the monastery Unser Lieben Frauen and the Johanniskirche.
Magdeburg Cathedral is the city's landmark. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil. It is the burial place of the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, Otto the Great, and his first wife, Queen Editha, and the most important sacred building in the eastern federal states.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. The Gothic cathedral of Magdeburg is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
