Goslar is a city in Lower Saxony and the district capital of Goslar County with a population of about 50,000.
The mining town, first mentioned in 979, became the seat of an imperial palace around the same time and continued to develop into a city until the 13th century. In 1290, Goslar attained imperial immediacy and retained the status of an independent imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire until mediatization in 1802, which is reflected in the city's coat of arms.
