A composite photo of the northern lights in Belgium on May 11, 2024. The picture of the sky with northern lights was taken in a field in Kerkom near Sint-Truiden between midnight and 1am on the night of 10 to 11 May. The somewhat longer exposure time of 30 seconds makes the stars look like short dashes instead of dots.
For a more dramatic effect, the picture was combined with a photo of the silhouette of a high-voltage pylon, taken earlier in Alken in April 2021.
The high-voltage mast refers to the potential impact of a severe solar storm on our energy infrastructure and communication systems.
Despite this being a composite photograph, the aurora in the photo is 100% real and it was also quite visible to the naked eye that night, albeit a little less spectacular in terms of its colour brilliance.
