About the artwork

Portion of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier seen from the air.

The Oosterscheldekering is a flood barrier in the Eastern Scheldt and is part of the Delta Works. It is also a 9-kilometer road link between Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, part of the N57 provincial road.

This flood barrier is a lockable storm surge barrier and contains large gates that can be closed during heavy storms, whether combined with a spring tide or not, to prevent the high tide from entering the Oosterschelde. At an expected water level of +3.00 meters NAP, the gates are closed from the control room in the Ir. J.W. Topshuis on the former work island Neeltje Jans. If no one is present here, the gates will automatically close at +3 meters NAP. Since being put into operation in 1986, the gates have closed several times. Closing the barrier takes about 75 minutes.

This photo was taken on Feb. 12, 2021. Above in the image you can see the Zeeland island of Schouwen-Duiveland.
