About the artwork

The Old Town Astronomical Clock is a world-famous clock dating from 1410, which is located on the south wall of the Old Town Hall on the Old Town Square. It is a masterpiece of Gothic science and technology and a valuable cultural monument.

The Astronomical Clock consists of three main components: the astronomical dial, which shows the position of the sun and moon as well as the signs of the zodiac; the "Way of the Apostles", a clockwork with images of apostles and other moving sculptures that appear every hour; and a calendar movement with a monthly and daily display.

Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., the figures of the 12 apostles appear in the two windows of the Prague Town Hall clock on the hour. At the same time, the four figures on either side of the astronomical dial come to life. On the left are the allegories of vanity and greed. On the right is the "Grim Reaper", representing the allegory of death. He turns the hourglass and rings the bell in the small tower above the apostle's passage. Next to him is the allegory of lust in the form of a Turk. A cockerel above the apostles' window begins to crow as soon as all the apostles have passed by. Then the bell at the top of the tower also begins to ring the hour.
